Did you know NYS is 5th largest producer of hardneck garlic in USA?
Cornell says we can plant up to the middle of November. If you aren’t in NYS, check the grow zone and Cooperative Extension for your area.
I have had really really good luck using container gardening with garlic. This has allowed me to control pathogen issues, nutrients, drainage, a little better and also to be able to quickly rotate out the soil easily (small containers). Another reason I use container gardening is so I can
move these somewhere out of site, as they are not exceptionally attractive and these help control aphids, etc. This means I can move these to a location where aphids have become an issue
without them interfering with the growth of plants that are not good companions. So basically they are little weapons against some things and if readily movable are very convenient to use.
I also use companion planting. http://www.motherearthnews.com/organic-gardening/companion-planting-guide-zmaz81mjzraw.aspx#axzz3H9tMUz7x
Also, containers allow for easier controls in experimentation and allow you to move to a safe location on event of hail the size of golf balls and other devastating weather.
That said…they like sun and well drained and friable soils, rich in what they like for nutrients…epson salt, etc., helps them taste even stronger…

Preserving garlic

Since I have been fortunate enough to have access to a home freeze drier, (Harvest Right) FD garlic is an option. I am looking for scientific literature that gives evidence this is the best way to preserve garlic for medicinal and culinary benefit. I assume this to be true but am also looking for evidence.
