The Real Zombie Apocalypse

With 79 million people in the U.S. on psychiatric drugs, what will happen to them when they no longer have access to their meds? While we here at the Ranch agree that psychiatric drugs have there place to treat mental illness, we also believe that they are now way over prescribed. 1 out of 5 adults in the U.S. in now on a psychiatric drug. According Medco Health1 in 5 American adults are currently taking mind-altering psychiatric drugs such as antidepressants, antipsychotics and anti-anxiety drugs. In fact, in 2013, more than one million children in the U.S. between the ages of 0 and 5 were prescribed these drugs. For all ages, more than ten million Americans took ADHD drugs, 41 million took antidepressants, more than six and a half million took antipsychotics and 36 million took anti-anxiety drugs. Those are some frightening numbers.

I was one of those numbers. During a routine office visit I told my Doctor I had had trouble sleeping lately. I was prescribed the sleeping aid Ambien. After all, if my doctor prescribed it, it must be safe right? I took the drug a few times without issue. I then had my Zombie experience. I took a pill and then sat down in a chair to send quick text. The next thing I remember was waking up the next morning feeling refreshed. I had a great nights sleep. I thank God my kids were already in bed an were not witness to what had really happened. The next morning my wife informed me that I never sent the text. She looked over at me staring at my phone and looking confused and knew something wasn’t right. She took my phone away from me. I was not happy about this, after all, I just needed to send a quick text. I asked for my phone back, many times, until I could no longer put my thoughts into words. At this point she decided she was going to help me get into bed where I belonged. For the next 5 minutes she had to wrestle me to get me the 15 feet to the bed. I told her she was full of it. I had no memory of any of these happening. That is when I was shown the video of the whole ordeal that was taken by a friend who was spending the night. I was shocked, and to be honest, frightened. I was not in control of my own actions. All this from a harmless sleeping aid that I will never take again.

So what will happen when the 79 million people who now take a psychiatric mind altering drug suddenly can’t? Withdrawal, in a big way. You may have a friend who has gone off their meds. They are not the same person, are they? Recent studies have shown that the dangers of withdrawal are vastly underestimated and overlooked, and that research suggests doctors tend to know more about putting people on medication than the actual withdrawal process. Sudden withdrawal fro these drugs has been documented to cause cognitive decline or impairment, disorientation, violence, homicidal ideation. That sure is a scary and zombie like list.

Now what about the millions of Americans that are addicted to illegal drugs and alcohol? We have all seen people going through withdrawal from these. Its been well documented what people go through detoxing from these drugs. It’s not a pretty sight. We have seen that a person will do just about anything to make themselves “right” and get there next fix. The truth is we don’t really know what this will look like. We do know that it will be a really ugly scene. Could this be the Real Zombie Apocalypse?
