Types And Effects Of Nuclear Weapons, The Basics

Think of this as a primer if you will. It is written to cover the basics that will matter most to you as a prepper. I am intentionally leaving out a lot of technical jargon; there are others willing to throw that out at you. There will be some terms and concepts that do need to be understood. One I will use a lot is Ground Zero (GZ).

Ground Zero is that point on the surface of the earth directly under, at, or over, a nuclear detonation. Your location, distance, and direction, from GZ is very important.

It’s important that you understand that there are four types of nuclear detonations or “burst”. Sub Surface Burst, Surface Burst, Air Burst, and High Altitude Burst.

All nuclear burst will produce the same basic effects, blinding light, tremendous heat, massive blast wave, radiation, and the electro magnetic pulse. However, the type of burst will greatly determine the degree of each effect upon the target.

A Sub Surface Burst is one that occurs underground in which the fireball produced does not break thru to the atmosphere. The ground will shake and there may be a surface collapse at GZ but on the surface there will be no radiation or EMPreleased or blast wave. Really nothing to be concerned with and I mention it only because they have been used during weapons design testing programs in the past.

A Surface Burst is a detonation on or near enough to the surface where the fireball touches the earth’s surface. This is the one we almost always see in the movies and in illustrations for articles like this. There will be a brilliant flash of light, a massive fireball, and an intense outward-bound blast wave outward from GZ. As the fireball starts to rise a second blast wave, this time returning towards GZ, arrives and brings with it massive amount of debris. This debris is forced upward into the fireball and creates the stem of the familiar “Mushroom Cloud”. At GZ there is total destruction and depending on the size, design of the weapon, and to a degree the terrain, the area of total destruction can be considerable. Large areas of partial and incomplete destruction will extend even further.

Meanwhile the Mushroom Cloud continues to rise through the atmosphere, the stem discontinues and temperatures inside the fireball start to cool down. As it cools the prevailing winds will start to push the fireball downwind. Material inside the fireball, now radioactive, cools and starts to fall, largest, heaviest material first. By the time it reaches 30,000 feet the fireball will appear to be just another cloud but this cloud will be leaving behind a trail of radioactive fallout for several hundred miles.

GZ will not be survivable and will be radioactive for a long time. The further away from GZ you are the better your chances. A safe distance downwind will be much further than a safe distance cross or upwind.

An Air Burst is a detonation in which the fireball does not touch the surface of the earth. It has all the other characteristics of a Surface Burst but there is no Mushroom Cloud and most important there will be no significant fallout. What the Air Burst will do however is create a much larger area of destruction. It does this by creating three blast waves.

As the expanding blast wave (or initial wave) strikes the surface of the earth, it is reflected off the ground to form a second shock wave traveling behind the first. This reflected wave travels faster than the initial wave since it is traveling through air already moving at high-speed due to the passage of the initial wave. The reflected blast wave will merge with the initial wave to form a single wave. This is called a Mach wave. The over-pressure at the front of the Mach wave is generally about twice as great as that at the initial blast wave. If you have trouble picturing this try thinking of a ripple hitting the edge of a calm pond. This deflected wave becomes a second wave. The third wave will be the displaced air mass returning to GZ.

These types of detonation will double the area of destruction without the messy fallout. You can see the military advantage of this type of detonation. GZ will not be survivable but will not be radioactive for long. The distance from GZ you will need to survive the destructive blast are much greater but fallout will not be an issue.

Last of all is the High Altitude Burst. A detonation above 100,000 feet is a High Altitude Burst. No blast damage. No fallout. Your personal physical threat from this would be the potential flash blindness from the initial burst. The purpose of this type of detonation is the Electro Magnetic Pulse.

Lets review. A Sub Surface Burst is really not a military option. Surface or Air Burst, if you are at or are too close to GZ you are either toast or soon to be toast. If it was an Air Burst fallout is not a threat. If it was a Surface Burst and you are located far enough up or cross wind you should be in good shape. If you are downwind…

Fallout. Fallout is material that was made temporarily radioactive in the fireball through a process called ionization. It has a known decay rate.

There are multiple layers in the atmosphere; each layer is capable of having different wind speeds and directions. As the fireball becomes a fallout cloud and raises and lowers thru each layer the winds in that layer will have an effect. Lower levels will have less effect while upper levels will have more. In predicting where the fallout will go it helps to be a weatherman. Generally Continental US weather patterns flow from the South to North and West to East. But, there are seasonal variations. Understanding Highs and Lows and where you are in relation to them, would be useful information. Knowing that your westerly winds are the lower part of an upper level low that is moving south you can determine that the fallout will mostly travel south and east. (I once had to explain why surface winds have no effect to an Air Force General. The Major who ran the DoD weather school just sat there and grinned.

Fallout Protection is all about Time, Distance, and Shielding. The longer it takes for fallout to arrive the less there will be. If you are in a safe space, the longer you wait to go out the less you will be exposed to. The greater the distance between you and fallout that has arrived the less radiation you will be exposed to. The more mass between you and the fallout the less radiation will reach you. I think everyone understands these concepts well enough.

The next topic is very important. Targeting in Nuclear War.

In an all out war the first strikes will be against an enemy’s ability to strike back. Missile Silos, Bomber and Submarine Bases, and Command and Control Centers will be the first targets. Major military bases, seaports and manufacturing centers would be secondary. In a nuclear war most targets are going to be hit with Air Burst. Let me say it again. In a nuclear war most detonations are going to be Air Burst. (ICBM Silos and Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado will be exceptions to this). Fallout will be a problem, but probably not to the extent most of us think. Nuclear Winter? Forget about it. Totally made up bull!

One last thing, if you are outdoors and see an unexplainable, sudden, intense, flash of light and cannot identify the source, immediately drop to the ground, close your eyes, and cover your ears and open your mouth. You want to protect against flash blindness and the oncoming over-pressure of the blast wave. Remember, there will be a second blast wave in the opposite direction, so don’t be in a hurry to get up. Of course you may be far enough away that the wave(s) may never get there. Count that as a blessing.

Russian Analyst Calls For Nuclear Attack On Yellowstone National Park

Russian geopolitical analyst Konstantin Sivkov has called for Moscow to launch a nuclear attack on Yellowstone National Park and the San Andreas fault line, noting that the devastating consequences would ‘disappear’ the United States as a country.

Sivkov made the comments in a piece for Russian trade newspaper VPK News, which were translated by the Sydney Morning Herald.

Arguing that NATO aggression against Russia required the “complete destruction of the enemy,” Sivkov went on to depict a chilling scenario.

“Geologists believe that the Yellowstone supervolcano could explode at any moment. There are signs of growing activity there. Therefore it suffices to push the relatively small, for example the impact of the munition megaton class to initiate an eruption. The consequences will be catastrophic for the United States – a country just disappears,” he said.

A Yellowstone supervolcano eruption would kill millions of people in the initial blast and bury much of the United States in volcanic ash. According to some experts, it could cause the end of the world. The last time a supervolcano exploded in Siberia, 85 per cent of all land species and 95 per cent of all ocean dwellers were completely wiped out.

In 2013 it was revealed that the magma below Yellowstone was two and a half times larger than previously thought, giving the park’s supervolcano the potential to cause an eruption 2,000 times more powerful than Mount St. Helens. Some experts say the caldera is overdue to erupt.

Sivkov also said that while Russia’s geography protected it from the threat posed by tsunamis, one could be triggered in the United States with an attack on the San Andreas fault.

“Another vulnerable area of the United States from the geophysical point of view, is the San Andreas fault – 1300 kilometers between the Pacific and North American plates … a detonation of a nuclear weapon there can trigger catastrophic events like a coast-scale tsunami which can completely destroy the infrastructure of the United States,” he wrote.

Sections of the San Andreas fault are overdue for major earthquake activity. “Researchers found that three sections of the San Andreas Fault system in Northern California — Hayward, Rodgers Creek and Green Valley — are either near or past their average recurrence interval and have accumulated sufficient strain to trigger earthquakes of magnitude 6.8 or greater,” reports CBS News.

Fearing that the United States plans to “destroy Russia,” Sivkov says that Moscow is in a much worse position than it was 50 years ago because it has far fewer allies and cannot compete against the military might of NATO and its allies

.

While it would be unthinkable for anyone inside the Kremlin to take Sivkov’s comments seriously, his rhetoric illustrates how fraught tensions are between Moscow and Washington.

Last month, General Sir Adrian Bradshaw, NATO’s deputy supreme allied commander in Europe, warned that the threat of a conflict with Russia, “represents an existential threat to our whole being”.

NUCLEAR WINTER: A NIGHTMARE THAT COULD BECOME REALITY

Scientists believe that a large scale nuclear war would cause nuclear winter, catapulting large amounts of soot, dust, and smoke into the Earth’s stratosphere — blocking out the sun for several months.

 

To survive a nuclear winter, you need to prepare well beforehand, understand safe behaviors, and stay cautious, especially if groups of people begin to roam the streets. When looking at surviving a nuclear winter, it’s best to be safe until the facts are known. In this brief article we are assuming the winter will last ten years.

What Is Nuclear Winter

Nuclear winter is a theoretical concept. In short, many scientists believe that a large scale nuclear war would change the global climate in great proportion. This is because such a war would likely catapult large amounts of soot and smoke (aerosol particles) into the Earth’s stratosphere. Along with this, the ash and dust (which could settle in the stratosphere for months or even years) would likely travel by wind over a great distance to create a wall between the Earth and the Sun.

Sunlight would have difficulty breaking through, and this would cause the temperatures to drop.

A study gone over at the annual American Geophysical Meeting in December of 2006 cited that even a small scale regional nuclear war could mess with the global climate for a decade or more. So the possibility of nuclear winter, especially considering the fact that we’re experiencing obvious global climate change without any such happening, is something to worry about.

PREPARE: Winterize your home:

 We really have no idea how cold it could get during a nuclear winter. Some belive that is going to get real cold, polar cold. With the already changing global climate, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.In the last years we’ ve seen real temperature drops during winter,the so called polar vortex.

 .  Install weather-stripping around doors and windows;

.  Put insulating film over windows and insulation in the attic and basement; and

.  Learn as much as you can about home repair now. Make sure you have a good manual and the tools you need to fix appliances and other equipment for ten years.

PREPARE: Have the right supplies and food at home (in addition to what is in your “normal” supplies):

.  Protective gear for every family member: layers of warm, insulated clothing with hoods, goggles, waterproof boots, several pairs of gloves;

.  If possible, set up a greenhouse. Plant and store non-hybrid seeds. The best are wheat, soybeans, rye, barley, alfalfa, and corn (all of which are excellent sources of nutrients). Though high levels of ultraviolet light may stunt these plants’ growth somewhat, they’d still produce food; and

.  Stock non-perishables, jerky and other kinds of dried meat at least for a year.In fact, no matter what tipe of emergency you would need to fece this is a must. (Ideal diet is 50 percent carbs, 30 percent fat, and the rest protein, give or take a few percentage points).Remember that a long winter and the absence of sunlight would have a big impact on our ability to grow our own food.Finding ways to produce food will become your top priority.

 . Have tools for home repair, excess attic and basement insulation on hand, even spray foam insulation so that if the crap ever does hit the fan — and temperatures around the world plummet — you’ll be ready, and able to add insulation to key areas of your home. You just might make it through a really cold winter.

PREPARE: Additional supplies to get you through the first year include:

 .  Sweaters, thermal shirts, thermal underwear, tights, and similar clothing that can be worn in layers (in addition to warm coats);

.  Kearny fallout meterCounter;

.  Potassium Iodate (KI03) tablets, baking soda and apple cider vinegar;

.  N95 particulate respirator masks and home air filter(s);

.  Extra soap, sponges and/or bristled brush (vegetable scrubbing brush); and

.  A manual that explains how to use all of these supplies.

PREPARE:Practice safe behaviors at all times during nuclear winter:

.  If you are near the blast area, move immediately to your nuclear shelter that has an entrance designed to reduce fallout exposure; 

.  If you have to go outside proceed with a great deal of caution, especially that first year. You will need to cover yourself from head to toe protecting your skin from ultraviolet rays; and

.  Pay special attention to protection of the vulnerable in your household. Keep children and the elderly protected. 

 Finally, remember to stay away from crowds. No matter how the duration of the winter, at some point people are going to become frustrated, scared, and angry. They will likely take to the streets, especially in the cities. For this crowd, often whipped up into a frenzy by a few people with an tendency towards violence, if you are not with them you are against them. If you keep your cool and a low profile, you and our family have a much better chance of survival.   

Nuclear winter is just one of the many disasters that could befall the world. There is no better time than now to begin assembling a preparedness kit. You will need more of everything, plus some specialized equipment. Pay heed to this list, keep your cool, and if anyone can survive, you can.

If you are an observer of the goings-on in the world and how the political, administrative and business elite operate, you have likely come to the conclusion that the whole situation is mind-boggling.



Millions of hard working Americans and our counterparts around the world alike sit at the very brink of an unprecedented economic collapse orchestrated by the financial and economic machinations of the privileged  few. They speak of belt tightening, the need for sacrifices and often mandate extreme taxation, promising that these strategies will make life better for everyone. Yet, while we struggle to put food on the table and keep roofs over our heads they enjoy lavish multi-million dollar vacations, state dinners, and unfathomable wealth as they indenture the rest of us and our progeny to lifetimes of servitude.

On the political front, leaders from the United States, Europe, China, Russia, Iran and just about every other nation on earth often speak of cooperation and are nominated for the highest of peace honors, while behind the scenes they mobilize armies and spew rhetoric whose outcome can only lead to widespread conflict. They seem completely devoid of consideration for the billions of lives that will be affected should the world, once again, be thrust into war.

At every turn the people are being deceived and led to slaughter like sheep.

In his most recent commentary Charlie McGrath of Wide Awake News puts things into perspective, warning that it is these very behaviors of the elite and the apathy of the American people that will invariably lead to America’s apocalyptic demise:

The hypocrisy… the outright, no holds barred in your face deception by government and by the upper echelons of the political elite class and by the upper echelons of the financial class… the ruling elite… the brazen attack on the truth is beyond comprehension…

It’s hard to even put together these commentary videos anymore… too look at the current state of our country… the path we’re on… our financial devastation that’s being laid out before us… the pain and the suffering that’s going to come with that final devastation that is yet to be realized by the majority of the people of this country but will be realized…

The stage is being set for never ending conflict… never ending control being given to the military and security industrial complex.

To sit back and watch this happen… it’s to the point that I just don’t understand…

Where are my fellow Americans? Where are you?

Where is the outrage by the people in this country?

Are we so simply bought off by bread and circus that as long as we have some kind of regular programming on television or the beer is cold we’re not going to stand up and say enough is enough?

When are we going to realize? Is it going to be after the lights go out? After the destruction of our dollar and our way of life?

….Every single day that passes by you’re losing more and more of your freedom.

We’re giving it away to people who could care less about you, your family or your future.

…There is no other path this will lead to other than the total devastation of everything that you know.
As much as we’d like to believe things are going to change, it’s time we accept the likelihood of a continued degradation of life in America as we know it. Unless just about every single politician in Congressional buildings around the country is immediately recalled and the founding principles outlined in the U.S. Constitution restored, we will continue to slide into a calamity unlike anything we have seen before in this country.

It’s time to begin taking immediate steps to prepare for the worst, because as you well know, the people in charge already have a plan in place, and it most certainly will not benefit you and your family.

Spent Nuclear Fuel Pools Are Full

Commercial ‘Spent Nuclear Fuel’ is composed of metal assemblies about 12’-15’ long. The fuel assemblies, after being in the reactor for 3 to 6 years, are stored underwater in ‘Spent Fuel Pools’ for 10 to 20 years before being sent for reprocessing or dry cask storage.

Of the 104 operating nuclear power plants in the United States, most spent nuclear fuel rods are kept onsite in Spent Fuel Pools.

The problem is, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission estimates that many of the nuclear power plants in the United States will be out of room in their spent fuel pools by 2015!
So what have they been doing?


They’ve been packing the spent fuel rods much more densely (in the spent fuel pools) than previously allowed.

Approximately one-quarter to one-third of the nuclear fuel load of a reactor is removed from the core every 12 to 24 months and replaced with fresh fuel.
Existing reactors generate about 2,000 tons per year – and this spent nuclear fuel has to go somewhere…

The thing is, there’s barely any room left – especially since the Obama administration terminated the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository in 2009.

Without expressing opinion one way or the other (regarding Yucca Mountain or ‘nuclear energy’), the fact remains that we have more than 100 nuclear power plants operating in the United States, right now, and there seems to be increasing risks surrounding spent nuclear fuel storage pools – most of which are jammed full of spent nuclear fuel rods.

When systems are forced to do more than they were designed to do — there are risks.
This is why I’m posting this on a ‘preparedness’ website.

Not only are these spent nuclear fuel pools ‘terrorist targets’, but there’s always the possibility of an unforeseen breakdown leading to catastrophe. If there is an interruption of cooling due to emergency situations, the water in the spent fuel pools may boil off, which would likely result in radioactive elements being released into the atmosphere.

Here are the locations of the nuclear waste locations in the United States, including spent nuclear fuel pools.

With more than 67,000 metric tons of commercial Spent Nuclear Fuel being stored at 77 sites in 35 states, and while SNF storage at reactors was intended to be temporary, pending disposal, No nation operates a disposal site for SNF.

Spent Nuclear Fuel storage is expected to be needed for more than 100 years, given the current status of operational nuclear power plants.

By the way, U.S. nuclear plants use the same sort of fuel pools to cool spent nuclear-fuel rods as those at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi plant, only the U.S. pools hold much more nuclear material – apparently about 10 times as much…

The Blueprint for World War III

This article is the first of a two part series which details the coming war. This war will not be a simple war of occupation such as what we saw in Iran and presently in Afghanistan. This war will be utterly devastating and has the potential to escalate into a conflict befitting the over-used term, “Armageddon”.

Part one of this series will present what boxing fans call, “the tale of tape”. The “tale of the tape” entails identifying the combatants, their respective sides as well as the relative strengths of the participants and their military forces.

The Relative Strengths of Each Side

The coming war will largely feature what pundits call the BRIC nations and the USA and her allies. Each side of this coming conflict possesses widely divergent military strengths, weaknesses and strategies.

The US Is Dependent On a Devastating First Strike Attack

The United States and her allies have a decided advantage of quick strike, long range battlefield capabilities because of superior aircraft and carrier strike capabilities. The BRIC nations have an advantage with manpower, rocket propelled weapons and tanks. The USA and her allies cannot win a sustained battlefield campaign because of the attrition factor. The Chinese have demonstrated the ability to negate the United States Navy’s technological advantage through the use of killer satellites. Therefore, the entire US strategy is predicated on a first strike before the Chinese can destroy the majority of the eyes and ears of the US military, namely, its superior satellite capabilities in which the US forces can quickly locate and destroy the enemy with its smart weapons before the enemy knows what hit them.

Nuclear Submarines Are the “X Factor”



Nuclear submarines are often looked at as the great equalizer. No matter who is winning on the ground, in the air and on the surface of the oceans, the submarine force has the capability to reign down unimaginable destruction upon their enemy. In the case of submarines, the USA and her allies are matched by their BRIC counterparts. Most subs carry eight nuclear missiles, each capable of destroying a major city.



The USA presumably has superior evasive techniques and therefore, wouldpresumablysurvive sub-killer strategies with greater frequency that their BRIC adversaries. Therefore, the BRIC nations might win every land battle, however, the victorious BRIC nations would not have many of its cities left to return to in the case of a nuclear war. The US submarines are, in effect, a formidable doomsday weapon.

The Trigger Event

For the United States and her allies to win a conventional war, a quick strike, surprise engagement is critical to the success of these forces. The BRICS would have an advantage in a longer prolonged conflict.This is particularly true when one considers that if time permitted, the Chinese have bragged that they could put 100 million men on a battlefield. Following the teachings of Sun Tsu in the famous book, The Art of War, it is critical that the BRIC nations be brought to the battlefield of choice by the USA for a quick and decisive engagement.



From a conventional warfare standpoint, the engagement is likely to be naval and involve aircraft. This plays to the advantage to the USA, whose superior long range strike capability is enhanced by their superior aircraft carriers.The USA forces would likely engage in a distracting land engagement first to hold and occupy the maximum number of the BRIC forces. The land strike, a first strike, will be directed at Syria. Given the present crisis, the Russians would have to decide on choosing between protecting its eastern border with the NATO forces poised to attack, or launching an offensive directed at protecting Syria. The Russians will choose self-defense.

The timing of the American invasion of Syria will take place when a sufficient number of American naval vessels are present in the Black Sea to checkmate the Russia military build up in Crimea which would serve as a staging area for military action in Syria. At the end of the day, once a large contingent of the American navy has moved into position off of the Baltic states, Russia will be powerless to prevent an US takeover of Syria. The path and progress of the CIA force ,ISIS, as it creates more designed havoc in Syria, will provide the impetus for US forces to enter Syria, thus provoking a Russian and a BRIC nation unified response.



Conventional wisdom states that once the US occupies Syria, Russia will be powerless to intervene on behalf of America’s next target, Iran because the US medium range missile batteries will prevent the Russian army from moving south into the region. With Russia out of the way, Iran will capitulate and stop selling oil for gold to the BRIC nations and the Petrodollar will be preserved. Iran will agree to the control of their oil fields by the US to avoid an invasion. They will capitulate because nobody will come to their rescue. At least that is what the US is hoping for. In part two, I will present a more likely scenario.

What about India and China? Won’t they move to protect Iran and thus, erode the Petrodollar? Not exactly, as China and India will have their hands full. The naval strike that I speak of will be directed at China. Before the commencement of hostilities, China will be given a short time to stand down or face destruction by the US submarines and the long range capabilities of US carriers. It is only necessary to target China’s major cities to force capitulation. This strategy would free the disenchanted Chinese, living in the rebellious outlying provinces to launch a revolution against Beijing. It is also rumored that the US does have space based nuclear weapons. If this is the case, this conflict could be over in the early morning hours of the first day. The Chinese submarine force could be capable of taking out several US cities, however, their submarines alone will not change the outcome. India will be held in check by Pakistan. Subsequently, India will never enter the fight. US forces in Afghanistan could block a Russian invasion of Pakistan from the north. It is clear that the USA and her allies will decisively defeat the BRIC nations in a conventional war, so long as it is a short conflict.

However, there is one game-changing strategy that the BRICS could employ. If the BRIC nations were to simultaneously launch a series of high altitude ICBM’s over every theater of potential war, the high altitude nuclear blast could create an EMP attack on a global scale. Such an action would negate the technological advantage of the US military and reduce the conflict to brutal savagery which would be dominated by global famine. Certainly the super elite would experience their much-coveted population reduction on an unprecedented scale. This action would ultimately produce a military stalemate and the war would disintegrate into one brute force versus another for a very long time. The nuclear arsenals of the BRICS vs. the USA and her allies are equivalent on paper. However, the reliability factor, related to the weapons, clearly favors the USA. To the sane person, the topic of nuclear war is almost a moot point. If either side resorts to the use of nuclear weapons on anything more than a battlefield scale with tactical nuclear weapons, this would render the conflict meaningless as the planet would be a very undesirable place to inhabit.



Then again, the psychopathic elite, safely tucked away in the tunnels beneath Denver International Airport, may feel they have the ability to wait out the devastation going on above. The following data demonstrates the ultimate futility of employing nuclear weapons on a regional and intercontinental basis. Of course, recognizing the futility of such utter destruction and hoping that this would serve as a deterrent to the psychopathic bankers from starting such a conflict, cannot be counted on. After all, if one’s ultimate goal is the destruction and reduction of 90% of the human race, and a nuclear war would constitute the level of chaos needed in order to bring forth “the order of out chaos” which would be needed to usher in the New World Order. This makes nuclear war more, not less likely!

Conclusion

 

Your children picked a very bad time to be born. The only winners in what is coming will be the Satan-serving bankers who are bankrolling both sides of the coming conflict.

 

It is the hope of this author that these facts will demonstrate the utter destruction that billions of innocent people on this planet face. Could these be the last days before the Tribulation and ultimate judgment? Perhaps, but the Bible cautions us that we will not know the exact time of the return of Jesus. Certainly, the conditions are ripe for nuclear conflict and it is all so tragic and avoidable.

Man was not meant to engage in banker wars of profit. No wonder Jesus chased the money changers from the Temple with a whip. The world needs an “Occupy Basel” movement, where the Bank of International Settlements resides. Such a movement would be needed in order to save humanity. In the event of a Nuclear Attack, a properly stocked emergency urban survival kit with NBC gear plus a good understanding of nuclear weapons and their effects may be the only thing that saves your life. In these times of political uncertainty, recent events such as the 911 Attacks on New York and the bombing at the Boston Marathon are driving home the point that nuclear attacks are becoming an ever increasing possibility. There’s also the threat of North Korea and it’s unpredictable leader Kim Jong Un.


A Nuclear Blasts can potentially destroy everything within a 50 mile radius, and they will also have immediate life threatening consequences to the neighboring communities hundreds of miles away. When they occur, urban survival may depend on mere seconds in response time. Having a pre-made emergency urban survival plan plus BOB (bug out bag) at the ready will get you on the road to safety much faster and will help you to survive the after effects of devastation.

Nuclear Blasts will emit huge shock waves of pressurized winds for miles around the epicenter of the bomb blast location. They can knock buildings off of their foundations while also contaminating the air and water with radioactive debris.

The light from the nuclear blast can cause permanent blindness when witnessed without averting the eyes. The intense heat can be felt for miles around. These are all factors that should be clearly communicated to family members, especially to small children. Here’s a great video explaining what to do during a nuclear blast:

Things to Do Before a Nuclear Blast

• Create an emergency urban survival kit that includes (among many other things) plenty of bottled water, nonperishable goods, battery powered flashlights and radios, along with extra batteries. Create several kits, one for your car and one for work.
• Design an emergency urban survival plan that includes a specific meeting location for all family members. Have two locations in mind. One that is immediately within your specific neighborhood, and another that is farther away outside of town.
• Locate a fallout shelter as part of your criteria. For work, perhaps your employer has a concrete structure or underground facility. At home, choose a location that provides minimum exposure to radiation and the ensuing heat blasts. Perhaps talk to a nearby office complex or hotel to determine if they have an adequate location.
• Subways and tunnels are another great location. In times of severe threat, you may want to enhance your emergency urban survival kit with enough supplies to last up to a minimum of 2 weeks.

Things to Do During a Nuclear Blast

• Stay alert of all new updates. If an alert is issued to seek cover, you may have very little time to react. If you are instructed to take cover, do not hesitate. Move swiftly, but do not panic. Follow your emergency urban survival plan.
• If there is not enough time to make it to your family’s pre-determined Nuclear Blast Shelter, take cover below ground as soon as possible. If this is not an option, locate a large concrete building and move towards the center. The goal is to place as many walls between you and the blast as possible.
• Grab your emergency urban survival kit and be prepared to stay below ground for a minimum of 24 hours. Do not evacuate the safety of this location until you are instructed by the governing authorities. Remember, there is the initial blast to worry about but also the resulting nuclear fallout and radiation.

When most folks think of a nuclear bombs, they tend to categorize them into a one size fits all category in their head, utter destruction. To say this isn’t true would not be honest, nuclear bombs create utter destruction. The reality of the matter is that nuclear bombs come in different sizes, all of them destructive, but some to a much greater degree. A small terrorist weapon might have much less destructive power than a multi-megaton Russian or Chinese warhead. This in turn would determine a safe distance from whatever warhead you might face.

Have you ever wondered which cities would be nuked first? You probably have not, because it is an unpleasant thought, and is something that most people believe would never happen. At one time between Russia and the United States alone, there were more than 20,000 nuclear warheads.

Not that long ago during the years of the Cuban missile crisis, every American feared the worst while the U.S. and the USSR were seemingly ready to end the world as we know it… Since then, stockpiles have been reduced somewhat, but in the big picture it is mostly irrelevant. If anything, the world is more dangerous today as apparently radical nations add their own nuclear weapons to the world’s nuclear arsenal.

Here is a mapped illustration of the top 30 most populated cities (and metro areas) in the United States which could potentially ‘go’ first in a nuclear war…

Depending on the engagement (who, what, and to what end), military and/or key infrastructure targets might be hit first, but it won’t be long down the target list until major cities are taken out.
In a worst case all-out nuclear engagement, we might assume that all cities could be hit given the number of nukes that are available to countries like Russia and even China.

Leaving out arguments of motivation (or lack thereof) for nuclear war, for the curious here is a map of the thirty most populated cities in America and the thirty largest Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA), followed by the populations list.

Some of the metro areas (yellow) overlap with their associated cities (red) from the top-30 list, while others are unique – just as some of the cities in the top-30 are by themselves.
The diameter of the region is chosen to indicate a possible evacuation perimeter where people may likely reach while escaping the city region (until they run out of gas in their half-filled [or less] gas tanks). This perimeter is highly debatable and dependent upon many factors, but it’s a starting point to visualize an exodus.

I have included the locations of any operating nuclear power plants located within any of the highlighted zones for added risk assessment. If a given region is nuked, the power grid there will likely go down, which may leave any regional nuclear reactor with only its diesel generators until they run out of fuel…

Nuclear War Preparedness…with an Eye Patch?

I recently learned an interesting fact about the readiness state of pilots during nuclear war scenarios. Interestingly, at DEFCON 2 (the second highest level), pilots in the Strategic Air Command (SAC) are required to wear eye patches to protect one eye from the blinding flash of a nuclear detonation. This got me thinking about the utility of such a step for preppers to potentially take if they ever find themselves in a “get home” situation when nuclear war may be imminent.

When a nuclear weapon is detonated, there are several immediate effects, including a blinding flash of light. Many survival experts simply give advice like, “don’t look at the flash.” However, I consider that easier said than done. If you are close to the detonation, you may instinctually look toward the disruption created by the blast with little control over your body’s natural reaction. This instinctual response may leave you blinded in both eyes and in a rather precarious position if you are attempting to get home or get to a substantial shelter.
For the reason outlined above, I would recommend preppers, especially those living in or near large cities or strategic military targets keep an eye patch in your “get home” bag. It’s unlikely that a nuclear attack will come as a complete surprise. There will likely be a bit of warning by government officials or news media and that will provide you an opportunity to put on an eye patch to walk or drive home or to shelter. This way if you look towards a blinding flash you will only be blinded in one eye.It is important to note that continuing a “get home” trip following a nearby detonation is not advised unless you can get home within 10 to 15 minutes, max, after the blast, otherwise seek shelter where you are. If you are closer than about 5 miles this won’t be an option, because you will likely be dead or severely injured from the blast pressure. If you are farther than about 5 miles, you will have a few minutes before the fallout begins to settle out of the atmosphere and the radiation levels begin to skyrocket exponentially. If you have preserved your vision with an eye patch, use that sacred time to find a shelter that puts the densest material possible between you and the outside atmosphere and stay there as long as supplies will allow, up to two weeks if possible.
