Earthquake Rocks San Francisco: Widespread Power Outages

70+ people have been injured, and tens of thousands are without power after a 6.0 Magnitude Earthquake rocked the San Francisco area overnight.

The quake caused significant damage in California’s northern Bay Area, igniting fires, knocking out power to tens of thousands, and damaging buildings and roadways throughout the area. Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for the Napa Valley area of California, which was the hardest-hit by the earthquake.

The earthquake occurred almost 9 miles south of Napa Valley, hitting at around 3:20 am. The quake was large enough to be felt throughout the Bay Area, from Santa Cruz to Sonoma County.
Reported Damage:
  • 70+ People have been hospitalized
  • 50,000 are without water
  • 80 gas & waterlines have been ruptured
  • 50,000 homes in Bay Area are without power.

This is the largest earthquake to hit California since the 1989 Loma Prieta quake, and experts say there is a 10% chance that this could be a precursor to a larger quake – something known as a foreshock.
