Rice and Beans, A Survival Combination

rice-and-beans-survival-food
Rice is rich in starch, and an excellent source of energy. Beans are rich in protein, and contain other minerals. The consumption of the two together provides all the essential amino acids and it is no wonder that this combination is a staple of many diets throughout the world.
Here’s why they are a good combination for long-term survival food storage, and their calories per pound, survival days, etc…
(UPDATED)

WHITE RICE

5 gallon bucket of White Rice (30 lbs of rice)
50,000 calories
25 survival days
1655 calories per pound (uncooked)
590 calories per pound (cooked)
675 calories per cup (uncooked)
205 calories per cup (cooked)
Note: For long term food storage, do not use brown rice (use only white rice) because it will go rancid within a year from it’s oils.

BEANS

5 gallon bucket of Beans (30 lbs of beans)
47,000 calories
24 survival days
1574 calories per pound (uncooked)
650 calories per pound (cooked)
670 calories per cup (uncooked)
245 calories per cup (cooked)
Note: There is a slight variation of calories per pound for different bean varieties. Numbers listed above are an average. They are mostly similar…
Note: After many years, beans loose their ability to soften up while re-hydrating in water, and the cooking process may result al dente. The beans will remain edible and will not have lost their food value – just saying. Maybe you rotate your beans every so many years…

Having one 5 gallon bucket each of rice and beans will provide nearly 50 days of ‘survival’ calories.
While you will not want to eat rice and beans every day and every meal, the combination is an inexpensive food storage ‘staple’ as part of your overall food storage diversity.
Some food storage outlets will sell you rice and/or beans already packed and sealed for long term food storage in buckets. However you can also do it yourself by purchasing in bulk and then use Mylar bags, oxygen absorbers, and your own 5 gallon buckets. You might also choose to use an ordinary kitchen vacuum sealer and store smaller quantities (which could still be held in 5 gallon buckets for safe keeping).

What Ebola Looks Like

End Time Prophecies

Practically Free Egg Carton Dryer Lint Firestarters

Here’s a fire starter that’s easy to make from materials you probably already have floating around your house. These little balls of fire will burn for approximately 15 minutes after being lit, giving you plenty of time to get a fire going even if you have to dry out some of the wood. I keep them in my car emergency kit and take them camping. Ready to get started?

Here’s what you’ll need:

Dryer lint–any variety will do.
Egg carton–doesn’t matter if it’s a dozen, 18 or the “flats” as long as it’s the pressed paper kind, NOT styrofoam or whatever else they might make egg cartons out of.
Wax–from old candles, crayons, or buy paraffin wax at the store (although it’s cheaper to buy cheap big candles at the thrift store or yard sale for this job–it doesn’t have to be food grade wax).
A sense of adventure–just kidding, if you didn’t have that already you wouldn’t be here!
First, get your egg carton and collect your dryer lint by cleaning off the lint trap of your dryer. DO NOT throw it away (I actually feel bad throwing dryer lint in the trash!). If you don’t do enough laundry at your own house, maybe you could spend an afternoon at the local laundromat and collect lint there.

Next, stuff the dryer lint in the egg carton where the eggs used to be. Don’t stuff too tight or your wax won’t be able to penetrate the lint ball and it won’t light and burn very well. If you don’t do a lot of laundry, this may take a while to fill a carton, if you’re like me and washing clothes all the time, you might fill a whole dozen with a full day’s laundry. Again, it doesn’t have to be packed in tight.

Now, set up a double boiler to melt your wax. You need a pot with water in it, and a can of some kind (I like the big V-8, tomato juice, apple juice, pineapple juice cans). Your can must be METAL and fit inside your pot of water with room to spare around it. Do not use a smaller pot that you like (or that is part of your double boiler setup) as your can–you’ll be melting wax in it and will likely ruin it!
Put your wax in the can and the can in the pot of water and heat the water. The wax will melt inside the can.

Put your egg carton on something that the wax can leak through onto (like waxed paper, foil, cardboard, or something you don’t care about) because some of the wax will soak through the egg carton.
When the wax is melted, scoop or pour it onto the lint in the egg carton. Make sure it soaks all the lint. You might want to get a fork or stick and smush it around in the egg cup a bit to ensure it is saturated all the way through. When you’re done waxing the lint, let it cool and harden and voila! Cheapo fire starters!

You can leave them all together in the shape of an egg carton and then tear them off one at a time, or tear them all apart and store them separately. They won’t light with a spark, so you’ll need matches or a lighter to get them burning. Throw some in your emergency kit, car kit, camping kit, whatever else kit you have that has matches in it. In our fire test, one of these little babies burned for 17 minutes and put out a good flame sufficient for even fire novices to get something burning with!

So now, what do you say to some eggs for breakfast and a day of laundry? :)
Keep preparing!

The Spread: Here’s Where People Are Being Tested for Ebola (With Results)

Ebola-Hospital-Preparatio-494963
With all of the myriad rumors and potential cases of Ebola out there, it’s important to remember that not every single person tested is going to be positive. This article lists potential cases, and our staff will update it with results as soon as they come in.

Canada:
A patient at a Toronto hospital is being tested for Ebola as well as other possible illnesses.
Toronto’s University Health Network (UHN) confirmed a patient who had recently traveled to West Africa was admitted to one of its four hospitals with a fever, but wouldn’t say which hospital or what West African country.
The person is in isolation and staff are using protective equipment until the test results are in – likely within the next 24 hours. (source)
United States:
Washington, D.C.
A patient with Ebola-like symptoms is being treated at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C., a hospital spokesperson confirmed late Friday morning.
The patient had traveled to Nigeria recently.
That person has been admitted to the hospital in stable condition, and is being isolated and tested. The medical team is working with the CDC to determine whether the patient has Ebola. (source)
UPDATE – second possible D.C. case:
Two people were hospitalized in isolation units at D.C. area hospitals on Friday with possible cases of Ebola, hospital officials confirmed.
One of the patients was being treated at D.C.’s Howard University Hospital, while the other was was admitted at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Montgomery County, Md.
The Howard patient, who had just returned to the U.S. after visiting Nigeria, was listed in stable condition with “symptoms that could be associated with Ebola,” a hospital statement said.
The Shady Grove patient had “flu-like symptoms and a travel history that matches criteria for possible Ebola,” officials there said in statement. But they added the individual was “showing signs of improvement” over the past 24 hours and noted “lab results indicate that this patient has another illness and we do not have a confirmed diagnosis of Ebola.” (source)
Texas
The Dallas Fire-Rescue ambulance crew who transported the man infected with Ebola to the hospital have tested negative for the Ebola virus, according to the City of Dallas.
The City of Dallas said Tuesday that the crew took all safety precautions and was isolated and tested following the discovery.
The three members of the ambulance crew are restricted to their homes while their conditions are observed and while the virus’ incubation period passes. (source)
Utah
Health officials are investigating a possible case of Ebola at Primary Children’s Hospital in Utah, it has been confirmed.
The patient, who has not been identified, had recently traveled to a country in Africa where transmission of the Ebola virus has not yet been reported, chief of pediatric infectious diseases Dr Andrew Pavia told a press conference.
He said the patient was admitted on Wednesday and insists it is unlikely they have the deadly virus.
Tests taken today have been sent to the CDC’s headquarters for evaluation as part of the hospital’s test. (source)
Hawaii
A possible Ebola virus case has surfaced in Hawaii, where a patient is in isolation and undergoing tests, the Hawaii Health Department said.
“We are early in the investigation of a patient, very, very early, who we’re investigating that might have Ebola. It’s very possible that they do and they have Ebola. I think it’s also more likely that they have another condition that presents with similar symptoms,” said Dr. Melissa Viray, deputy state epidemiologist told KHON-TV, Honolulu. She added the public need not be concerned, reinforcing that the situation remains only a possible case of the Ebola virus. (source)
Georgia
The Cobb County Jail is no longer accepting inmates after an inmate developed a fever. The man told jail officials that he recently traveled to Africa.
Jail officials confirm to Channel 2′s Ross Cavitt that the inmate is being tested for Ebola.
The man was arrested overnight for DUI. (source)

Outrageous: Dallas Paramedics Weren’t Told They Were Driving Ebola Contaminated Ambulance for 48 Hours

ebola-paramedic

The Centers for Disease Control and medical experts around the country say they have procedures in place to deal with Ebola and pandemics.

But according to one paramedic in Dallas, neither he or anyone else was told that the ambulance they were driving was the same one used to transport Ebola patient Thomas Duncan to the hospital.
A Dallas paramedic claimed he drove the ambulance that the US Ebola patient was transported in and that he was not contacted by anyone about the potential exposure. He claims he drove the ambulance sometime after the patient was transported. The Dallas Fire Department left the ambulance that transported Ebola patient Thomas Duncan to the hospital in service for at least 48 hours before putting it in quarantine on Wednesday.
Breitbart
It is not known how many paramedics drove the ambulance during the 48 hour period or how many patients were transported.

The incident is the latest in a string of procedural breakdowns that included initially sending Duncan home from the hospital with antibiotics and failing to properly decontaminate the apartment in which he stayed during the onset of symptoms.

Officials continue to insist that America’s medical infrastructure is prepared to handle Ebola.
In about 21 days we’ll know if they are right.

People are already starting to panic. What happens in three weeks if this starts showing up in schoolchildren or other metro areas?

All You Ever Need To Build A DIY Hand Dug Well

All You Ever Need To Build A DIY Hand Dug Well

I think I am right in saying if you do not have a means to get or purify water in a survival or SHTF situation your chances are very bleak and death would be very near at all times.
If you own your own land you can always dig a well. This is a lot of work and in some states you have to have a permit to even dig a well. Saying you have a permit or you do not need one, digging a well is relatively straight forward. There are a couple of ways to make a well.
The first is to drill a well with big expensive equipment. The second is to dig a well, the old fashioned way. In olden times, wells were dug with a pick and shovel, with a lot of backbreaking work. Depending upon the location, the well might have to be dug quite deep to provide enough water. That much backbreaking work wasn’t something that anyone would want to do, even though it was a necessity.
Get the completely FREE PDF in the link below and be sure to save it or print it off. This PDF contains everything you will ever need to know to dig a well. It is very informative and best of all… FREE.

Is An Ebola Epidemic Inevitable In America?

EbolaPrevention

What Can Citizens Do To Protect Themselves?

With each successive day since the man (Thomas Eric Duncan) who flew from Liberia to Texas was diagnosed with the first case of the Ebola virus in the U.S., more and more unsettling facts are starting to emerge. As we are seeing, Americans are the ‘last to know’ when it comes to our safety.
It turns out that Mr. Duncan actually reached U.S. soil via two separate United Airlines flights. Why is this important? Do we all need one of those yellow suits?

The CDC and other related agencies are desperately trying to calm the American public as the stock market started to tank yesterday. And part of their strategy is trying to downplay the ease of transmission of this deadly disease, which kills approximately 60-70% of victims who are not treated by the most advanced medical treatments, which as anyone knows is available on a very, very limited basis! That means that if thousands of Americans are suddenly infected, there won’t be the same results we are seeing with the few cases being touted by the CDC… they just don’t have the facilities or trained personnel to deal with an onslaught of Ebola cases here in America.

And keep this in mind as you listen to the re-assurances of the CDC spokespeople:

All of the missionaries and doctors who were infected with Ebola Virus and who returned to the U.S. from Africa for treatment were trained specialists and who had a medical understanding of exactly how the disease is transmitted; yet they still contracted this deadly disease! If they got sick, knowing what they knew, how much more vulnerable is the average person?

The bottom line is this virus is easily transmitted via bodily fluids… this means that if someone who is carrying the virus, who may even be asymptomatic, sneezes or coughs in a confined airspace, that aerosol of bodily fluids can potentially introduce the virus into the respiratory systems of nearby people, thereby potentially infecting them.

Further, if an infected carrier has any bodily fluids on their hands, and uses any fixtures in a restroom or touches any surface that is subsequently handled by other uninfected individuals within a few minutes, those uninfected individuals who have touched one of the those surfaces and then touches their eye or any tissues inside their nose or mouth, are also subject to potential infection!

As we begin to see, if we have 200-250 people on a jet with an infected individual who has used the restroom (sink, toilet, etc.) there is the potential to infect many people on that flight, who may subsequently in turn spread the disease during their travels.

So the new disclosure as to Mr. Duncan’s travels seems to infer that many people could have been potentially infected. So where are all these people now?

Ebola is transmitted through body fluids. Isolation may be necessary if the virus spreads.
Ebola is transmitted through body fluids. Isolation may be necessary if the virus spreads.

Making matters even worse, the Texas hospital that first saw Mr. Duncan sent him back home after initially misdiagnosing his illness as a flu-like illness! Of course during the period that he waited to be seen in the waiting room, he may have infected others in that room; and if he used the restroom, there may have been further exposures stemming from there, and so on… remember, this disease spreads exponentially!

So as the CDC tries to calm the public, this insidious and deadly disease may already have a significant start in our country.

My advice to Americans is to prepare, and do it now! It’s too late to prepare if there is an epidemic! How, you may ask?

Here is the advice that I am giving my own friends and family:

1. As we have already witnessed, we cannot depend on the CDC or the U.S. Government to contain this disease (or even give us the facts up-front without delay), so their quarantine measures may also be unreliable. Look at where we are today! They let at least Duncan easily come into the U.S.; how many others may have also made their way here into the U.S. and make be actively ill and yet to be discovered. The first stages of the disease resemble a flu and even fooled the doctors at the Texas hospital! And with the upcoming Flu season, the Ebola virus would have plenty of camouflage if begins to spread!

So we can only rely upon ourselves; if you are unsure if an epidemic is happening in your neighborhood (a sudden rash of people with the ‘flu’), it may be smart to isolate yourself and your family until you are doubly sure you are safe. Make sure you have a basic battery-powered radio receiver to monitor the news.

It is also possible that if an epidemic should occur, the Government itself may order martial law and require that everyone stay in their homes (means you cannot go outside for supplies). In order to comply with such an order, or to make use of the effective tactic of isolating yourself and your family, you will need supplies! Make sure you have enough water, food, clothing, medicines, fuel and any other must-have items to last at least a month. And keep 72 hours of these kinds of supplies in your vehicle or Bug-Out-Bag in case you have to evacuate an area fast.

2. Make sure you have plenty of face masks with at least an N95 rating. I would also make sure you have a box or two of nitrile-rubber surgical gloves in a couple sizes to accommodate the people in your family or group.

3. Make sure you have some spray bottles and a gallon of chlorine bleach. You can make a 20% solution of chlorine bleach mixed with water as a disinfectant (it will kill the virus that it contacts… do not use this on people or pets). You can use this disinfectant as needed; such as spraying on the soles of your shoes, contaminated surfaces, etc.

4. Maintain a careful awareness of the items that you bring into your home. For instance; any chilled item that is contaminated with the bodily fluids of an infected person (sneezes-coughs on some packaged goods that are in a cooler, etc.) will remain a potential source of infection longer than something that is exposed to the sun, or even a surface that is dry and at room temperature. Wash fruits and vegetables very carefully and completely before serving or consuming same.

5. Personal hygiene needs to be significantly enhanced: Buy quality soap and use it to wash your hands anytime you are exposed to any surface that may be contaminated. Pay particular attention to avoiding touching your face with your hands unless they have been thoroughly washed. The eyes, nose and mouth (as well as any open wound) are pathways for viruses and bacteria to enter the body.
The best possible protection is by far obtained by isolation and avoiding anyone who may be possibly infected. This is not easy and requires planning and discipline. If you are fortunate enough to be in an area that is not immediately involved in an outbreak, then you may have time to secure some form of isolation. For those people who have taken to the concept of ‘Nautical Prepping’ this process is actually quite simple as outlined in my book on that subject.

The way this situation is progressing so far, we’ll be lucky if we don’t have some form of epidemic in the U.S. Here again… pray for the best outcome, while preparing for the worst.

Cheers! Capt. Bill
