The Biggest Killer When the SHTF

nVJi261409597780

What is the Biggest Killer?

The biggest killer will not be the SHTF event. It will not be bands of thugs or roving gangs coming to take what you have. It will not announce he is coming. You will look him in the face and not know he is there. It’s a killer I have come face to face with and fight everyday. I have seen his brutal tactics. I have seen how he preys on the elderly and very young without mercy. The biggest killer after a SHTF scenario will be the one you have probably only given only a little thought to; water.

Let me explain why and how water is going to be the biggest killer. It’s easy really; it already is. 3.5 million people die each year due to water related illness from drinking unsafe water. That comes to just over 9500 people a day. I know water you’re thinking, “That is only over in countries in Africa, or only in third world countries.” And you would be partially right. A country like Liberia has been in the news as of late due to the Ebola outbreak. Ebola has killed just under 700 people in Liberia from March till the time I am writing this, and it is world news. The reality is the water related deaths in the same country were over 700 for just last week. There was nothing special about last week. That happens every week and it doesn’t make the news. There is something big we need to learn from those third world countries though, because it can happen here.

Take a look at the recent news of water related problems just here at home. Toxic algae making drinking water unsafe. Drought so bad out west that community wells are running dry and lakes are drying up. Still think it can’t happen here? It already is.

In a grid down situation, city water towers will be empty within a few days. They rely on power to pump water into the tower. Nothing will flow from your faucet. You will not be able to flush your toilet. Even people with wells will have difficulties getting water unless they have a back up generator or other source of making power to run the pump.

Our bodies need not just water, but safe water. Unsafe water is full of pathogens that will make you sick. It’s the pathogens that will kill you. Your body will do whatever it takes to fight the enemies in the unsafe water you just drank.

Vomiting, diarrhea, and high fever are common fairly quickly after you consume unsafe water. You will become severely dehydrated, which is what most often leads to death.

So right now you maybe thinking you are fine. You know that the water has to be made safe. You have water filters stockpiled, you know how to make a solar still, and we all know how to boil water to make it safe. But have you considered where this water is coming from? If the only water source close to you is a small pond or creek that you will be sharing with all of your neighbors it might quickly become a breeding ground for additional disease. You have no idea what someone may have done upstream or what kind of poisons someone may have put into the water. People do very stupid things now. Turn on the nightly news if you need more convincing. The stupidity of others will greatly increase when SHTF.

How can I defend against this great Killer?

You need to have a plan in place now for where you are going to get water. My family purchased a bug out location in the country that consisted of a house and a few outbuilding on 11 acres. The first thing I did was locate the natural watershed on the property and then I dug a pond. I dug deep because I wanted to make sure we would have enough water to supply not only our physical needs, but also be able to irrigate the garden if needed. This demand was put to the test the following summer when drought hit. It was one of the driest summers on record. Nothing was green, even the grass died. The pond level was low, but there was still water in it.

We sold that location this spring and have decided it would be better for our family to prepare to bunker down in place in suburbia. One of the first things we did this summer is put in an 18,000 gallon holding tank. It’s also known as a pool. We can divert rain water off of the house or shed to keep it filled. It will be our source for water if need be. We are confident we will be able to use this water through filtration methods we have already used and have standing by.

You can also install rain barrels to collect water. Some places have made it illegal to collect rain or run off which I think is insane in the land of the free. That doesn’t mean you can’t be ready to do so should the need arise.

You should also be practicing using less water. Try taking a bucket shower. Fill a one gallon bucket up with water. Use a cup to get yourself wet, wash everything at once, use the cup to rinse off. You should be able to do it with half a gallon. Use cold water; you’ll be very motivated to use as little as possible. Figure out other ways to really cut down on your water usage.

The key to beating this killer is knowing ahead of time how you are going to fight him. Know where several water sources are, even if it is a far walk. Know how you are going to transport that water and how to make it safe. Know the time involved and how much you will need. Don’t wait for it to happen to learn how you will survive. Practice now and practice often!

ISIS in Mexico Means ISIS Is Here In the United States

ISIS in Mexico

Recent statements by the administration that the southern border is secure is disputed by the fact that an investigative reporter dressed up as one of the most recognizable terrorist in the world, Osama Bin Laden, was able stroll back and forth across the border, undetected by border agents.

The crossings by the journalist disguised, as a terrorist was to demonstrate that individual terrorists and groups are able to gain entry to the United States from Mexico quite easily. Many experts contend that drug cartels in Mexico are linked to a number of terrorist organizations to include ISIS.

This means that these terrorist organizations already have a support system within Mexico, a base of operations in which to work from, in other words. They can plan attacks virtually undetected just miles south of the U.S. Border, and cross over into this country seemingly at will to carry out those attacks.

Those tasked with tracking terrorist organizations’ social networks have discovered numerous messages referencing the porous Southern Borders of the United States. In fact, ISIS has called for operations to commence along the U.S. Southern Border. You can only imagine what type of operations they have in mind.

Messages from the terrorist group include calls for individuals to cross over from Mexico to carry out attacks. Several messages even referenced the recent video by James O’Keefe (referenced above) disguising himself as Bin Laden and crossing over.

It is not surprising that any group or individual(s) wishing us harm would use the Southern Border as a pathway to the United States. It seems that some security experts within the government do not realize that terrorist can watch the news as well as the rest of us can (Winter, 2014).

The more cynical among us will naturally assume that ISIS is already here in the United States, and it is just a matter of time before they create death and destruction. Inflict terror, and that means more than just killing people. What makes it terrifying is that they can essentially attack us at will, at a time of their choosing, and this is terror in and of itself, knowing but not knowing when or where. It affects us all psychologically, and for some this can be debilitating. We will all have to live in a heightened awareness mode, which is very stressful, and it cannot be maintained for long.

What Can You Expect

Like any crisis, you may be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Some will be targets of opportunity. A so-called lone wolf terrorist may decide to walk into a shopping mall with explosives strapped their chest. Organized attacks may be against bridges, tunnels, elevated highways, power stations, airports, rail stations and even against financial institutions or governmental offices.
Other targets will likely be soft targets, ones with a higher probability of being successful. In other words, some targets will be those unable to thwart any attack against them, which may include schools, churches, restaurants, sporting events and even along streets by use of car bombs.

You can expect utility disruptions, blocked roadways and areas off limits. You may not be able to get to work for several days or even longer. Your children’s schools may closed out of an abundance of caution. You will need to have plans for childcare if you are still able to get to work and the schools are closed, and daycares may close as well. Business and stores may close in the area or be forced to close by the authorities, because they are deemed a target. You may be denied access to any number of places because of heightened security.

Attacks regardless of their size and scope will have the attended consequences, and that is a disruption of your life, and the life of everyone in the area and the nation as well. You will change your habits, and your life will become more difficult and more stressful. This is what terror does to people.

Keep It Together

You cannot let the fear of an attack paralyze you and force you into seclusion. Life has to go on, and things have to be done, but this does not mean you let your guard down. Look to your supplies and make sure you have what is needed to sustain you if the roadways are damaged or destroyed and you cannot get out of your community.

Make sure you have what it takes to shelter in place for several days or even longer. Bugging-out is probably not your best course of action if a small-scale attack happens in your city or community, because you could easily evacuate into another area that could be attacked as well. It is not very likely that individuals or their homes would be targeted specifically, but some will become collateral damage.

Pay attention to your surroundings and check and double check your supplies, because it is not a matter of if anymore, but a matter of when an attack happens.

The Blueprint for World War III

This article is the first of a two part series which details the coming war. This war will not be a simple war of occupation such as what we saw in Iran and presently in Afghanistan. This war will be utterly devastating and has the potential to escalate into a conflict befitting the over-used term, “Armageddon”.

Part one of this series will present what boxing fans call, “the tale of tape”. The “tale of the tape” entails identifying the combatants, their respective sides as well as the relative strengths of the participants and their military forces.

The Relative Strengths of Each Side

The coming war will largely feature what pundits call the BRIC nations and the USA and her allies. Each side of this coming conflict possesses widely divergent military strengths, weaknesses and strategies.

The US Is Dependent On a Devastating First Strike Attack

The United States and her allies have a decided advantage of quick strike, long range battlefield capabilities because of superior aircraft and carrier strike capabilities. The BRIC nations have an advantage with manpower, rocket propelled weapons and tanks. The USA and her allies cannot win a sustained battlefield campaign because of the attrition factor. The Chinese have demonstrated the ability to negate the United States Navy’s technological advantage through the use of killer satellites. Therefore, the entire US strategy is predicated on a first strike before the Chinese can destroy the majority of the eyes and ears of the US military, namely, its superior satellite capabilities in which the US forces can quickly locate and destroy the enemy with its smart weapons before the enemy knows what hit them.

Nuclear Submarines Are the “X Factor”

nuke-sub

Nuclear submarines are often looked at as the great equalizer. No matter who is winning on the ground, in the air and on the surface of the oceans, the submarine force has the capability to reign down unimaginable destruction upon their enemy. In the case of submarines, the USA and her allies are matched by their BRIC counterparts. Most subs carry eight nuclear missiles, each capable of destroying a major city.

nuke-sub-firing

The USA presumably has superior evasive techniques and therefore, wouldpresumablysurvive sub-killer strategies with greater frequency that their BRIC adversaries. Therefore, the BRIC nations might win every land battle, however, the victorious BRIC nations would not have many of its cities left to return to in the case of a nuclear war. The US submarines are, in effect, a formidable doomsday weapon.

The Trigger Event

For the United States and her allies to win a conventional war, a quick strike, surprise engagement is critical to the success of these forces. The BRICS would have an advantage in a longer prolonged conflict. This is particularly true when one considers that if time permitted, the Chinese have bragged that they could put 100 million men on a battlefield. Following the teachings of Sun Tsu in the famous book, The Art of War, it is critical that the BRIC nations be brought to the battlefield of choice by the USA for a quick and decisive engagement.

wwiii-nuke-silo-launch-

From a conventional warfare standpoint, the engagement is likely to be naval and involve aircraft. This plays to the advantage to the USA, whose superior long range strike capability is enhanced by their superior aircraft carriers. The USA forces would likely engage in a distracting land engagement first to hold and occupy the maximum number of the BRIC forces. The land strike, a first strike, will be directed at Syria. Given the present crisis, the Russians would have to decide on choosing between protecting its eastern border with the NATO forces poised to attack, or launching an offensive directed at protecting Syria. The Russians will choose self-defense.

The timing of the American invasion of Syria will take place when a sufficient number of American naval vessels are present in the Black Sea to checkmate the Russia military build up in Crimea which would serve as a staging area for military action in Syria. At the end of the day, once a large contingent of the American navy has moved into position off of the Baltic states, Russia will be powerless to prevent an US takeover of Syria. The path and progress of the CIA force ,ISIS, as it creates more designed havoc in Syria, will provide the impetus for US forces to enter Syria, thus provoking a Russian and a BRIC nation unified response.

wwiii-nuke-silo-command-structure

Conventional wisdom states that once the US occupies Syria, Russia will be powerless to intervene on behalf of America’s next target, Iran because the US medium range missile batteries will prevent the Russian army from moving south into the region. With Russia out of the way, Iran will capitulate and stop selling oil for gold to the BRIC nations and the Petrodollar will be preserved. Iran will agree to the control of their oil fields by the US to avoid an invasion. They will capitulate because nobody will come to their rescue. At least that is what the US is hoping for. In part two, I will present a more likely scenario.

What about India and China? Won’t they move to protect Iran and thus, erode the Petrodollar? Not exactly, as China and India will have their hands full. The naval strike that I speak of will be directed at China. Before the commencement of hostilities, China will be given a short time to stand down or face destruction by the US submarines and the long range capabilities of US carriers. It is only necessary to target China’s major cities to force capitulation. This strategy would free the disenchanted Chinese, living in the rebellious outlying provinces to launch a revolution against Beijing. It is also rumored that the US does have space based nuclear weapons. If this is the case, this conflict could be over in the early morning hours of the first day. The Chinese submarine force could be capable of taking out several US cities, however, their submarines alone will not change the outcome. India will be held in check by Pakistan. Subsequently, India will never enter the fight. US forces in Afghanistan could block a Russian invasion of Pakistan from the north. It is clear that the USA and her allies will decisively defeat the BRIC nations in a conventional war, so long as it is a short conflict.

However, there is one game-changing strategy that the BRICS could employ. If the BRIC nations were to simultaneously launch a series of high altitude ICBM’s over every theater of potential war, the high altitude nuclear blast could create an EMP attack on a global scale. Such an action would negate the technological advantage of the US military and reduce the conflict to brutal savagery which would be dominated by global famine. Certainly the super elite would experience their much-coveted population reduction on an unprecedented scale. This action would ultimately produce a military stalemate and the war would disintegrate into one brute force versus another for a very long time. The former popular TV show, Revolution, comes to mind. More on the trigger event along with a more detailed chronology will be presented in the next part of this series.

NUCLEAR WEAPONS: BRIC NATIONS VS USA & ALLIES

wwiii-DIA
(Pictured left: Likely refuge for the elite psychopathic banksters. Pictured Right: This display, located at DIA, speaks volumes to the awake among us.)

The nuclear arsenals of the BRICS vs. the USA and her allies are equivalent on paper. However, the reliability factor, related to the weapons, clearly favors the USA. To the sane person, the topic of nuclear war is almost a moot point. If either side resorts to the use of nuclear weapons on anything more than a battlefield scale with tactical nuclear weapons, this would render the conflict meaningless as the planet would be a very undesirable place to inhabit.

wwiii-dia-mural-4-nwo-airport-commission

Then again, the psychopathic elite, safely tucked away in the tunnels beneath Denver International Airport, may feel they have the ability to wait out the devastation going on above. The following data demonstrates the ultimate futility of employing nuclear weapons on a regional and intercontinental basis. Of course, recognizing the futility of such utter destruction and hoping that this would serve as a deterrent to the psychopathic bankers from starting such a conflict, cannot be counted on. After all, if one’s ultimate goal is the destruction and reduction of 90% of the human race, and a nuclear war would constitute the level of chaos needed in order to bring forth “the order of out chaos” which would be needed to usher in the New World Order. This makes nuclear war more, not less likely!

Conclusion

Your children picked a very bad time to be born. The only winners in what is coming will be the Satan-serving bankers who are bankrolling both sides of the coming conflict.

It is the hope of this author that these facts will demonstrate the utter destruction that billions of innocent people on this planet face. Could these be the last days before the Tribulation and ultimate judgment? Perhaps, but the Bible cautions us that we will not know the exact time of the return of Jesus. Certainly, the conditions are ripe for nuclear conflict and it is all so tragic and avoidable.

wwiii-jesus-and-the-money-changers

Jesus showed humanity over 2,000 years ago, who the real enemy of humanity is. It is unquestoinably demonic but manifests itself in the human form of a banker. Man was not meant to engage in banker wars of profit. No wonder Jesus chased the money changers from the Temple with a whip. The world needs an “Occupy Basel” movement, where the Bank of International Settlements resides. Such a movement would be needed in order to save humanity. These psychopathic bankers need to be imprisoned in order to save humanity from complete destruction. Do not hold your breath, martial law, followed by World War III, is probably unavoidable.

PREPPERs' Dictionary

The Essential Preppers' Dictionary

Have you ever read a blog post or an article by a serious prepper and found yourself at a loss to understand some of the terms used? Preppers have their own lingo, often condensed into military or government-style acronyms. Here’s your (more or less!) definitive guide to prepper jargon and terminology.

A

ABAO—“All bets are off.” Who knows what will happen next? Chaos and confusion may reign, and you will have to look out for yourself and your family. This refers to a situation roughly equivalent to TEOTWAWKI (see ‘T’) or YOYO (see ‘Y’).
ALPHA STRATEGY—A survival strategy involving storing extra supplies for one’s own use, for bartering, or for charitable donation in case of an emergency situation. Some recommended items to store for bartering include:
Don’t forget that you can also barter with useful skills such as carpentry, welding, farming, well-digging, sewing, ham radio operation, medicine, home schooling, hair cutting, and more.

B

BIB—“Bug-in-bag.” A collection of necessary items such as emergency drinking water, food bars or MREs, essential medications, first-aid supplies, a light source, emergency blankets, ponchos, etc., for hunkering down and sheltering in place during a time of danger or emergency.
BO—“Bug out.” A term meaning to evacuate quickly, to head for safer territory or a pre-determined safe house or hideout.
BOB—“Bug-out-bag.” A backpack or other carrier filled with emergency food, water and water purification/filtration supplies, a map, extra clothing, meds, tools, sleeping bag, etc., meant for a time when quick evacuation from your home is necessary. Also known as a 72-hour kit, grab-and-go bag, emergency kit, etc.
BOL—“Bug-out location.” A pre-determined destination to head to if you must evacuate. A safe haven to head for; a retreat.
BOR—“Bug-out Route.” The route you’ve determined would be best for you to take if you had to evacuate. You might have more than one possibility.
BOV—“Bug-out vehicle.” A car, bicycle, or other vehicle to transport you and your gear to your BOL. (See above).

C

CACHE (pronounced like “cash”)—A stash of necessary items hidden in an out-of-the-way spot or buried where only the owner knows of it. May include food, water, clothing, meds, weapons, ammunition, cash, tools, or whatever the person feels he or she may need, packed in a water-tight container. Many preppers hide caches along their expected evacuation or bug-out route or at their BOL (see ‘B’).
CARRINGTON EVENT—A natural EMP-like event caused by a large Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) (see definition below) of the sun, directed toward densely inhabited parts of the earth, so that our electrical grid and components are “fried,” or rendered useless. Named for Richard Carrington, a British amateur astronomer who in August of 1859 observed unusually bright spots on the sun. They heralded two of the most powerful geomagnetic storms in history, just days apart, which caused fire and sparks to shower from telegraph machines and colorful aurora to be visible all over the world. Such an event today would cause extensive damage to the grid, with resulting social and economic disruption for years, costing an estimated 1-2 trillion dollars to repair.
CDC—“Centers for Disease Control and Prevention” with headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. National center where medical scientists and microbiologists study viruses, bacteria, poisons, etc. that cause disease. They issue warnings of potential epidemics, pandemics, and advice on how to avoid illness or contamination. They also study health-affecting conditions such as obesity and diabetes. In addition to the headquarters, 12 other locations exist in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
CME—“Coronal Mass Ejection.” A large, destructive solar flare that if directed toward densely populated areas of the earth, could wipe out all electronic components, including the World Wide Web, telephone service, cell phones and towers, radio stations, etc.
COMSEC—Communications security. Difficult to achieve in our cyber society, this refers to the security of our phone calls, emails, radio and other transmissions of information.

D

DH—Dehydrated, referring to a food or product from which the majority of the water has been removed by exposure to moving air and warmth, as in powdered milk, dried fruits and vegetables, jerky, etc.
DHS—Department of Homeland Security. The arm of the government that oversees all threats to our homeland, especially from terrorists who would attack and destroy from within or without.
DLP—Defense of life and property. A right of free people in the U.S. and most other free countries to exercise when either life or property is threatened, subject to individual laws and statutes in different places.

E

EDC—“Everyday carry.” The items you carry with you on a daily basis—your wallet or bag, keys, pocketknife, weapon or other personal defense item, etc. Can include emergency items you usually have with you or in your vehicle, such as emergency food, water, meds, paracord, etc.
EMP—“Electromagnetic pulse.” If a nuclear device were exploded high in the atmosphere, the resulting EMP would take out all electronic devices, including the power grid, cell phones, computers, appliances, cars with electronic ignition, etc. for hundreds of miles. The result would be similar to that of a Carrington Event (see ‘C’).

F

FARADAY CAGE—a shielding device made of metal and anti-static materials to protect electronic equipment from an intense eruption of radiation following a destructive solar flare or an EMP attack. Can be as large as a building or smaller than a microwave oven. (See ‘E’).
FD—Freeze dried, as in prepared just-add-water meals or individual components of meat, cheese, fruits, vegetables, etc., usually packaged to last for at least 25 years. The freeze drying process includes flash freezing, then changing the moisture to vapor before it can liquefy. This process preserves the nutrition, size, shape, color and flavor of foods better than simple dehydration.
FEMA—“Federal Emergency Management Administration.” The government’s first line of defense when the homeland is threatened by natural or man-made catastrophe. They deal in disaster mitigation, preparedness, emergency response, recovery, education and references. They are not intended to be first responders, but after terror attacks or natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes and tornados, they assist in providing temporary housing, food, water, and clothing to those who are displaced. FEMA works with other agencies to determine what and how much assistance is necessary to get the affected area rehabilitated.
FIFO—“First in, first out”—a good policy for rotating food storage.
FOOD GRADE—A term used for plastic containers, bottles, tubes and hoses, etc. used for food and water intended for human consumption. Storage pails and buckets made of dense polyethylene plastic are considered food-grade, and containers labeled HDTP, PET or PETE, #1, or #2 are safe to contain potable liquids—water, milk, soda pop, etc.
FUD—“Fear, uncertainty, doubt.” A triple threat that renders us less than effective in difficult situations. “Sally told Peter that FUD had overtaken him as soon as the volcano erupted—he stood rooted to his tracks.”

G

GENNY—Slang for “generator,” either gas or solar-powered.
GHB—“Get-home-bag.” A bag filled with items you’d need to keep in your car or at your workplace to aid you in getting home safely in case of a catastrophe. May include emergency food, water, meds, first-aid supplies, flashlight, tools, weapons, etc.
GMO—“Genetically modified organism.” Not the same as “hybrid,” this refers to plants or animals in which a gene from one species is transferred to another, creating something artificial (not found in nature). Though hotly contested, many people believe that GMO foods and seeds are not safe for human consumption. Tests in mice have shown that after 2 or 3 generations of being fed GMO diets, they became sterile, and some actually grew hair in their mouths. Many preppers store non-GMO seeds to ensure the possibility of growing healthy, sustainable food supplies that don’t cause these problems.
GOLDEN HORDE—Named for the Mongol hordes that overran and terrorized parts of the world in the 13th century, this refers to a mixed mob of desperate, lawless refugees and looters that would pour out of large metropolitan areas WTSHTF (see ‘W’).

H

HAM—A type of radio or also used to refer to an amateur radio operator—an extremely useful individual in shortwave radio communications who can often receive and send messages when no other way to communicate is available.
HEIRLOOM SEEDS—seeds that are NOT hybrid and NOT GMO (see ‘G’). They come from plants that stay “true to form” planting after planting, from which new seeds may be gathered and kept for future plantings. Pumpkin seeds will produce the same kind of pumpkin, not an inedible pumpkin-like creation, and green bean seeds will continue to grow green beans. Also known as Millennium seeds, survival seeds, sustainable seeds, or preparedness seeds.

I

INCH—“I’m not (or never) coming home.” Coded message for family or housemates letting them know not to wait around for you, because you’ve “bugged out.”
ISOLATED RETREAT—Another name for your BOL (see ‘B’). A privately-owned spot where a person could be almost completely self-sufficient in times of social lawlessness and trouble.

J

JIC—“Just in case.”

L

LARDER—A cool place to store food. Early American homesteaders had their larders in the coolest, shadiest part of the house. Preppers often have hidden or divided larders so that all of their store is not immediately obvious to potential intruders.
LRP—“Long-Range Patrol.” A military term for an excursion in which the soldier is away from base camp for an extended period and must take food along. Ready to eat LRP rations are similar to MREs (see ‘M’). Many hikers, backpackers, and those who are prepping for possible evacuation purchase these. People who want a no-cook, ready to eat supply of food at home also purchase LRPs.

M

MAG—“Mutual aid (or assistance) group.” Individuals in a specific geographical location who meet for the purpose of sharing preparation ideas and planning for emergencies.
MRE—“Meal Ready to Eat”. Military-style packaged entrees, side dishes, crackers or bread, desserts, etc. Popular as take-alongs for bug-out situations, hiking, camping, backpacking, or shelter-in-place food options. No cooking or water required.

O

OPSEC—Operational Security. The practice of keeping enemies from discovering your tactical plans. Sayings: “OPSEC is everyone’s responsibility.” and “Loose lips sink ships.”
ORGANIC—Grown without benefit (or harm) of chemical fertilizers or pesticides.
OTG—“Off the grid.” Self-sufficient, able to survive and thrive without participating in any community utilities or services such as water, sewer, electricity, or gas.

P

PEAK OIL—The point in time when the world’s oil supplies go into an irreversible decline, and people are forced to find other sources of energy.
POLLYANNA—A person who is in denial about potential dangers of catastrophe, and always optimistic that nothing bad will happen to them. (Named for the title character of a popular children’s book series and movie, who always tried to find something positive in any situation.)
PREP—Slang for “prepare.”
PREPPER—One who prepares for any eventuality as best he can; a survivalist.
PREPS—Preparations.
PSK—“Personal Survival Kit,” aka PEK (Personal Emergency Kit).
PTB—“The powers that be”—those in charge in any group, country, or community, including government and law enforcement.

S

SAFE ROOM—A fortified room or closet built into your home, preferably hidden, to which you and family members can run in case of intruders. It should be bullet-proof, have a good lock, an air source, a communications source, a flashlight, a store of emergency food and water, and comfort items as desired.
SERE—Acronym for “Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape.”
SHEEPLE—People who allow themselves to be herded like sheep by the PTB (see ‘p’), who never question authority or prep for the future, believing that the government will always take care of them
SIP—“Shelter in place,” bug-in, stay where you are when an emergency strikes
SOLAR FLARE—A Coronal Mass Ejection or CME (see ‘C’). The danger would be in a massive solar flare directed at an inhabited part of the earth, where it would knock out the electrical grid and destroy all electronics.

T

TEOTWAWKI—“The End of the World as We Know It”—a time when all around us changes dramatically, including our way of life. The extreme situation for which all preppers try to be ready. This term was coined by James W. Rawls, who wrote a popular book called How to Survive the End of the World as we Know It—Tactics, Techniques, and Technology for Uncertain Times.

W

WROL—“Without rule of law.” A potentially lawless state of society.
WTSHTF—“When the “stuff” or “expletive” hits the fan.” This refers to a time of extreme societal disturbance caused by widespread natural or man-made disaster, war, or famine. Panic, chaos, and looting will be prevalent.

Y

YOYO—“You’re on your own.” A situation in which the government, at all levels, ceases to provide essential services such as water, utilities, fire and police protection, and phone service

Z

ZOMBIES—the unfortunate people who did not plan or prepare for disrupted conditions WTSHTF (see ‘W’). They would be a direct threat to preppers because they’d be desperate and willing to attack for food, water, and shelter. They may appear famished and have sores and scabs from injuries or malnutrition, hence the name. Also a term in fictional novels, movies, and TV shows for dead people who come back to life and exist in a half-living/half-dead state.

National Preparedness Month: Put Your Preps to the Test with 24 Hours Unplugged

Put your preps to the test with 24 hours unplugged

It’s National Preparedness Month, and the Professional Prepared Bloggers Association is celebrating by providing you with tons of information from some of the best writers in the niche in our 30 Days of Preparedness round-up!

It’s Day 28!!!! It’s time to take your game up a notch with 24 hours unplugged! No fair doing this on a day when you will be away from your normal activities anyway – you want to put your preps to the test.

A grid down scenario doesn’t have to be a massive EMP that detonates over the middle of the country, throwing us back to the 1800s. It can be as simple (and likely) as a winter storm, a hurricane, or a computer issue at your local power station. While this is a fairly common occurrence, many people still seem taken completely by surprise when it happens. Without back-up heat, cooking methods, and lighting, the unprepared family could be in for a very unpleasant time until the lights come back on. Every family should be prepared for a minimum of two weeks without power. Nearly 2000 families were still without power 94 days after Superstorm Sandy hit the East Coast.

Here’s why you should test your preps.

A couple of years ago, my youngest daughter and I spent a year in the North Woods of Ontario. It was a grand adventure, totally different from the city life we’d had previous to this. Our small cabin was on the banks of a beautiful lake and the edge of hundreds of acres of forest wilderness. It was heated only by wood, and although we had electricity, we were warned that it was sporadic, since we were fairly remote and regular maintenance was not always performed on the lines of the area.
As a prepared family we were pretty sure we’d be just fine when the power went out.

The first time it happened was on a mild early autumn morning. The power went out for no apparent reason, and we high-fived each other. Game on!

Since it was afternoon and the weather was nice, it really wasn’t much of a challenge. The power returned before daylight, we had some stuff in the fridge for sandwiches, and we basically just needed to entertain ourselves sans grid. No big deal – we are bookworms, so we spent the day curled up with some good reads. We did make one unexpected discovery – our well was pumped by an electric component, so when the power went out, we also had no running water, including water to flush with. Of course, we had stored drinking water, and we brought a couple of buckets of water up from the lake for flushing, so this was a minor inconvenience.

However, it did get me thinking about how we would flush if the weather was cold enough that the lake was frozen, but there wasn’t snow on the ground. Hmmm…#1 Note to Self – store water for flushing too!

The next power outage occurred a couple of weeks later and it was a much bigger deal. The initial outage hit at about 7 o’clock on a chilly fall evening. It was dark and cold. We stoked up a fire in the woodstove, and began to search for our lighting solutions. Unfortunately, I hadn’t had the forethought to set up off-grid lighting in each room, so after digging for my candles in the dark closet, I had to carry one around to light candles in subsequent rooms.

#2 Note to Self: Keep candles, holders, and lighters in each room in a place which is easy to access in the dark. After this, we placed candles in holders are part of the decor all around the house.
The wind roared around outside the cabin and our power did not return for 3 days. We used the woodstove to heat up meals, but we couldn’t find all of the bits and pieces for a game we wanted to play. #3 Note to Self: Keep off-grid entertainment well-organized, especially if there are children in the house.

On the second day of the outage, we dragged our chest freezer out onto the deck to keep our food from going bad in the cozy cabin. #4 Note to Self: Get something sturdy to store food in outdoors that won’t draw wild animals to your porch that also doesn’t require you to drag a 200+ pound appliance outside.

By the time the next power outage rolled around, we had learned many lessons. At the first sign of windy weather, we immediately filled the bathtub. A bucket right beside the tub served as a container to transfer water from the tub to the toilet so that we could flush. A sturdy Rubbermaid storage bench with a lock resided on our deck, waiting to be pressed into duty as an outdoor freezer. Each room boasted of decorative candles. Home canned meals in jars lined my kitchen shelves, and a beautiful cast iron Dutch oven sat at the ready to simmer a delicious stew or pot of beans on the woodstove. A couple of pretty baskets were filled with art supplies and games (with all of their pieces) and a couple of kerosene lamps that were bright enough for reading sat at either end of the sofa. Since the fans that blew the heat into the bedrooms obviously did not work without power, we had a couple of air mattresses to set up in the living room on the coldest nights, so we could stay cozy by the fire.
The next time the power went out, we were excited because it meant a break in our day-to-day routine of work and school. Power outages had become mini-vacations, and were no longer even a blip on the radar for us.

We don’t live in our little cabin in the woods any more, but the lessons we learned allow us to take power outages in stride in a way that most people don’t. Even though we don’t expect a shaky grid where we live now, our home is organized in the way that we learned up North. Lighting, extra water, sanitation, cold food solutions, and off-grid cooking tools are all close at hand should they be needed.

Are you ready to test your preps?

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to go for 24 hours without the grid. This means no electrical power, no central climate control, and no running water! Some people will go hardcore and turn of the main water valve and flip all of the breakers. Others will just opt not to use those items.

  1. During your 24 hours off-grid, you’ll eat three meals, go to the bathroom, keep your family clean and at a comfortable temperature, and entertain yourselves. This a tall order in some locations!
  2. Plan ahead of time how you’ll overcome the challenges – you can learn a lot this way.
  3. But the real learning experience will come from the challenges you didn’t expect and plan for. This is how you will fill the holes that exist in your preps. It is far better to discover those gaps now, when back-up is as close as the breaker box in your basement, than it is to discover it when disaster strikes.
  4. Give every family member a notebook so they can jot down what works and what doesn’t. Once your Grid-Down drill is over, compare notes. You may be surprised at the observations your children have made.
  5. Make a shopping list based on the notes and fill those gaps!

Testing…1,2,3…

Considering the Denial Bubble

ISIS has committed war crimes that make Genghis Khan look like a boyscout. (Photo: RT)

I try to be a calm and positive force for good here on the blog. I do this because I think that the truth is often the less alarmist path, and also because in the US, people are so deluged by bad news from all sides that they have developed an ability to discount or set aside bad news. This means that a lot of people who need to make emergency plans or be ready to shelter in place use their energies to box up the bad news they have heard, rather than actually making those plans and following them through. It takes energy to live in a bubble of denial, and many people do. It's been difficult in the past few months not to continually post world news which is very somber. I have tried to balance positive things with which we have power, while interspersing the things we should talk about, that are decidedly bad news.

I have friends from my time in Russia who are wonderful generous people, but just as Barack Obama does not speak for me, Mr. Putin often does not speak for them. I personally disapprove of Mr. Putin's quest to enter the sovereign nation of Ukraine. As I type, armored Russian units press deeper into Eastern Ukraine where there is already an humanitarian crisis. Mr. Putin himself denies that this is happening. There is deep concern for Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, as the leader of Russia considers Ukraine's borders to be of no consequence to him. Mr. Putin, a former leader of the KGB, has paid off Russian debt, and sharply upgraded all manner of military supplies and equipment. There is also a mandatory military service for each young Russian, so there are plenty of young people to send in a larger scale war with Russia. There is also a propaganda machine gearing up as if to go to war. Russia Today is wholly subsidized by Putin's war machine, and justifies all of Mr. Putin's actions. I listen to RT daily and the chasm between BBC, DW, NHK, Arirang, and Euronews becomes ever wider.) Mr. Putin has often said that the greatest loss of the last century was the break up of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. It does not take much imagination to see that he may be trying to reassemble it during his tenure. No less than seventeen people who have stood in vocal opposition to Mr. Putin have died under unusual circumstances. (One of the most notable, Alexander Litvinenko, a former KGB agent who was a specialist in organized crime, was killed using polonium laced tea while at home in London. The polonium used was traced to Russia by Britain.). Mr. Putin is a strong leader who has championed the Russian Orthodox Church at home, but this does not make him a positive force. He will apparently do anything to shape the world as he wishes in the name of the Russian Federation. Sometimes, I wish we had a leader half as committed to our own nation, as Mr. Putin.

Meanwhile, the US continues with an ineffectual leader who ignores the looming world on fire, and makes sweeping changes to American life while completely ignoring the Constitution. This furthur provides unique opportunities in which to gain ground for Mr. Putin. ISIS, who is more violent than Al Queda thinks is necessary or desirable, is gaining ground in Iraq and in Syria.

Here in the US, Rome burns while Nero golfs. The US porous Southern border lets in countless illegal aliens, some of whom are extremely likely to be representatives of ISIS here on specific missions.
This week Judicial Watch, one of the best government watchdogs in the US, announced that high level US governmental forces have received information that an attack on the US through our Southern borders is imminent. Rather than protecting us through this, many of us believe that the present Obama administration will likely use this to furthur strip our own personal freedoms and find ways to take our guns and ammunition. Increasingly, it seems that the broad arming of much of our citizenry might someday be all that prevents a foreign takeover of our nation and its remaining resources.

ISIS has promised that we, the United States, will bathe in our own blood. With a history of sexual violence which makes prior groups look like boyscouts, we have no doubt as to their intent.

The world is moving in a very negative direction for most of us. It is clearly time to make preparations necessary in order to stay home and eat there for an extended period if necessary. Be prepared to render normal and expected first aid/medical care as needed at home. Get CPR certified. Take a concealed weapons course, if you haven't already. Take advantage of the present sales of freeze dried food. Stock vinyl gloves should Ebola or other illnesses become an issue in your area. I don't need you to be frightened, but I do need you to spend less energy and resources on the maintenance of a denial bubble, and more resources on making personal plans to keep yourself and your families safe throughout some difficult times, which look to be just up ahead.

Survival Coffee

Every morning I take the pulse of the planet by brewing a cup of coffee. As the second most traded commodity on earth, and the number one imported food item in the United States, coffee is a major indicator of how smoothly the world is turning. Any hints of social collapse will hit coffee faster than either gold or silver, and only oil is traded more heavily than those precious caffeinated beans.

By Doc Montana, a contributing author of SurvivalCache.com

The National Coffee Association suggests there might be some truth in the legend that coffee was discovered in thehow to survive without coffee Ethiopian highlands during the ninth century by a goat herder who noticed that his animals did not sleep well after eating the seeds of a particular plant. After some human experimentation with the beans, coffee as we know it was born. By 600 years ago it was off and running as a preferred beverage across the Middle East, and today it is keeping humans up at night all over the world.

Coffee and Guns

Although coffee is a global phenomenon, the only US state that grows coffee is Hawaii. But when the SHTF, as the saying goes, you can’t get there from here so your survival supply is all there is. Coffee has always been an important barter item, and it’s post-collapse value will skyrocket. Coffee and conflict go hand-in-hand. GI Joe, as in “Cup of Joe” experienced the importance of coffee as a ration during war time. Tea may have launch this country, but coffee and bullets keep it free!
Rarely does a daily hunt begin without a coffee ritual of some sort. Whether drinking “vitamin C” in a small town cafe, or pouring the black gold from a thermos in a duck hunting blind, coffee and guns are inseparable. So when society takes a wrong turn and you don’t know who to trust, coffee will still be your friend.

Standing Your Grounds

The point of grinding coffee beans is to break open the bean exposing the flavorful roasted meat inside the seed, andteotwawki coffee for survival increase the bean’s surface area that can directly contact hot water. To grind coffee, all you need are coffee beans, and something harder than the beans. Kitchen or home-sized grain mills will make short order of coffee beans, but more than a few of the prepared folks I know have a hand grinder in the house, whether in storage or on display as an antique. Hand grinders are like giant pepper mills, which, by the way, can also be coaxed into service as coffee grinders depending on their size and capacity.
The best option is to get a modern hand grinder of which there are so many available that I cannot help but wonder if the manufacturers know something about the future that I don’t. For the long haul, I’d recommend one of the nicer modern stainless steel grinders rather than either an retro-looking one or a grinder with any part made of glass.

Stone Grinding

A mortar and pestle does a fine job of grinding up beans. Another method is similar to the maze (corn) grinding tools of the ancients. The mano, or hand grinder, is a rock with a depression like a bowl in it whereby another smaller rock is used to crush or grind the material placed in the bowl. Rolling pins also pulverize coffee beans when the two come in contact. Hardly a new idea since stone rolling pins are as ancient as the mano. And if you have plenty of time on your hands, or some children that need a diversion, imagine all the post-apocalyptic fun you can have crushing individual coffee beans with pliers.

Once you have the fresh grounds, the next step, and only other step is to make the coffee. Here are several ways to take that next step, some more refined than others, but all are effective and well-tested.

Steeped Coffee

Steeping coffee is a variant of cooking coffee, and is simply letting the coffee grounds sit in hot water for a while. The coffee cups for survivalFrench Press is a popular coffee cooking method, but the familiar glass cylinder and matching plunger is hardly necessary. Any pot, cup, or tin can will work fine. Some outdoor companies are manufacturing combination French Press/coffee mugs where prior to drinking, the plunger handle is depressed forcing all the grounds to the bottom of the mug. Two cautions from experience; first the filter is about 90% effective meaning a toothy grin while drinking from a “Big Sky Bistro” will likely produce some laughter by those viewing the black grounds wedged in your teeth. And second, there will be an impressive pile of sludge at the bottom of your cup from which you can still drink. But don’t. It is nothing more than expended coffee syrup and will provide a rather tragic end to your drinking bliss.

Cowboy Coffee

Another variation of cooking coffee is popular named Cowboy Coffee, or boiled coffee and requires nothing more than boiled coffeethe grounds be boiled in water. Cowboy Coffee differs from steeped coffee in that steeping has the hot water added to the ground coffee while away from the primary heat source. Cowboy Coffee is the simplest preparation method, but not the best for flavor due to the higher temperature that the grounds are exposed to for a longer time. Of course if you are up in the mountains, water boils at a lower temperature than at sea level so the damage to the taste of the coffee is less. Authentic Cowboy Coffee is little more than a handful of grounds tossed into a pot of boiling water. Or worse, thrown into the pot prior to boiling. If you want the true experience of Cowboy Coffee you can either drink the nectar, grounds and all, or run the fluid through an old sock to strain out the grounds. The more refined among us might make their Cowboy Coffee by placing the grounds into the sock before dropping it in the pot upping the macho factor. Since Cowboy Coffee is usually more bitter than other brewing methods, a dash of salt is often added to the pot to counteract the excess bitter tasting compounds.

Filtered Brew

Pour-Over coffee, or filtering, requires a filter medium full of grounds, a container below the filter to capture the coffee beans for survivalcoffee, and hot water to pour over the grounds. With a little practice, the coffee flavor can be controlled since the fluid flowing out of the filter will change over time as the bean’s essence is depleted. A popular survival accessory is known as a coffee sock. Not to be confused with the actual stocking used in Cowboy Coffee, the coffee sock is more of a reusable cloth strainer with a handle. A note of caution about filters is that the taste of the filter can overpower that of the coffee. If you use non-filter specific paper for your filter, such as paper towels, the bleach taste of the paper can render the coffee undrinkable. But that, of course, depends on your level of desperation. Filtered coffee is also trendy these days for health reasons. When brewed, coffee releases plenty of chemicals, some desired, some not. The longer the coffee sits in hot water, the more of the undesirable molecules leach from the beans into your brew of COF2E2.

Pressure Coffee

Espresso is the popular name for pressure brewed coffee. The variations espresso for survival
of Americano, Latte, and Cappuccino are just post-expresso alterations to the tiny cup of black gold squeezed from the beans by pressurized hot water. Although sounding somewhat complex, pressure-brewed coffee can be accomplished with remarkably simple devices. Moka Pots, or stovetop espresso machines are small two-piece pots where a water reservoir base is topped with a strainer full of tightly packed ground coffee. A small pot is screwed tightly to the base holding the complete assembly together. As the water in the reservoir reaches boiling temperature, it encounters the resistance of the compacted coffee. The increased challenge posed by the coffee causes the water to heat beyond the traditional boiling point until the pressure is great enough to move through the grounds and up a tube to the top of the pot where it then falls into the collection area of the pot.

Also Read: Long Term Coffee Storage For When the SHTF

The process happens fairly quickly once boiling is reached. Due to the extreme danger of placing what amounts to a coffee pot bomb on your stove, I recommend only professionally made pressure coffee makers with a pressure release valve on the reservoir. Fabricating your own post-apocalyptic stove top espresso machine out of car parts is just asking for trouble.

The Grim Reality

Regardless of your brewing methods, you must have coffee beans to make coffee. In a post-collapse situation, coffeemust have coffee for survival may be as powerful a barter item as ammo. However coffee does have a shelf-life and unless vacuum packed, it will absorb other flavors as well as lose its own. Freeze dried coffee will last quite a while as well, but in my opinion as a gift card-carrying coffee snob, things will have to really hit the fan before I’ll get excited about the freeze dried stuff.

Roast Your Own

Now all this assumes you have roasted coffee beans in your possession. If you only have green (unroasted) coffee beans, you will need to roast them first. While more of an art than a procedure, roasting coffee beans can be done using simple tools. With little more than a camp stove and old-school stove-top popcorn maker, coffee beans can be roasted into drinkable condition. Just don’t get your hopes up right away as there are far more ways to destroy your beans then to roast them. Home roasting is best done outdoors due to the smoke, but remember, there are only two main roasting mistakes once you have the right temperature dialed in: not roasting long enough, and roasting for too long. Other than that, its just a game of getting it right for your taste.

One For The Road

Survival has both hard edges and soft ones. As has been discovered through countless investigations of who lives and who dies when the SHTF, a positive attitude plays as much a role as having the right equipment. If one intends to live through the dark times, then one must learn to smell the roses though the smoke. If you don’t then you are already at a serious disadvantage. Instead, prepare to drink up and know when the world starts to crumble, you will preserve one of the finest aspects of modern society: the cup of coffee.
